THE FUTURE OF THE GLOBAL TRADING SYSTEM /
by Charles Shaw

Compiled from a two-day conference hosted by the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations the day after the Fifth WTO Ministerial Conference in Cancun broke down in an historic walkout by a group of 21 Developing nations.

THE DYSFUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GLOBAL TRADE AND WAR /
by Amanda Louise Ruch

On the heels of the WTO meeting in Cancun, Globalization earns a well-deserved spotlight. Let us not turn away too quickly from recent events, especially those related to the Iraq war, as we consider current trends and the past century's dealings with trade. Both historically and today, conflict, both "in the name of" and "as a result of," and trade often show up together as partners in crime.

GRASSO, GLOBALIZATION, AND CORPORATE GREED /
by John M. Eger

On the heels of the WTO meeting in Cancun, Globalization earns a well-deserved spotlight. THE BALKANIZATION OF THE GLOBAL VILLAGE AND THE DISPERSION OF SOFT POWER /
by Deena and Michael Weinstein

American cultural supremacy, parading as globalization, was always far from complete. But it was a plausible illusion. Now it has irrevocably unwound and the world has entered a period of religious, regional, national and local parochialism. How far it will go and whether it will derail globalization is anyone's guess, but it is plain that it has arrived.

GLOBAL NATIONALISM: FORGING AN OLD FRONTIRR /
by Tim Seul

As a result of globalization, nation-states face new challenges. One challenge, some argue, is to the nation-state system itself. That is, does the current international environment reflect the necessities of life in the 21st Century? Or, is the further transcendence of boundaries to human interaction brought upon the need for rethinking the ways in which we interact with one another.

THE SEMANTICS AND SEX OF GLOBALIZATION /
Lina Ramona Vitkauskas

Globalization" must first simply stand before its own reflection. By doing this, it is allowed to explore its intentions, ambitions, limits, desires, and ultimate goals as a young girl before the mirror would. It makes sense to assign sensual, explorative, feminine anthropomorphic qualities to an abstraction that clearly conjures the image of a dominant male stud-ever present on the horizon with twisted horns razing the sky in its glory.

LIBERALISM RESTORED: A NEW LIBERAL MANIFESTO /
Noman Council

Liberalism is based on two ideals: an openness to change and progress and a defining sense that the dynamic relationship between the good of the society and the needs and desires of the individual must be balanced in a way that conveys a strong respect for individual liberty.

THE NEW AFRICAN CONTEST /
Akin Olatidoye

The labor force and the wealth of Nigeria are the serfs and resources they organize on the plantation also called Nigeria. And the profit is never ploughed back adequately into the veins of the Nigerian economy.

GLOBALIZATION: NATURE'S URGE TOWARD EQUILIBRIUM /
James H. Bath

Globalization is the world in the process of moving itself into a state of equilibrium. We see this equalizing flow in many spheres: communications, culture, environment, research, entertainment, medicine, and more. Our ideologies tend to keep us polarized while natural evolution refuses to accept the childish nonsense. Nature wants equilibrium. Like ants raising angry fists against a steamroller, we demand Mother Nature take a different course.

PSEUDO-SOCIALISM: THEORETICAL ROOTS AND PRACTICAL FRUITS /
Michael Batiukov

What "socialism" means is still an open question in the political and academic world. Politicians often use the American definition of socialism, which it so say a synonym for "dictatorship" and "totalitarianism". In the academic world "socialism" usually means "state control of the economy". But today there are many countries in which some socialist features are used, and they are neither nor dictatorships nor totalitarian, nor do they have much state control of the economy.

MORTARLESS BRICKS: THE WAVERING WALLS OF GLOBALIZATION /
Glenn Brigaldino

Autumn reflections on Social Organization - Information (i.e. economic or political) and knowledge management skills are essential tools for embarking on and staying on board a course of sustainable development. Today these tools are controlled politically and used strategically by those who have the means and access to the material fruits of globalization.

THE ETHICS OF GLOBALIZATION /
Jim Martin

Business listens first and foremost to the fat in its wallet. The grassroots protests against Talisman Energy for their presence and activities in the Sudan were ultimately effective, causing a corporation to walk away from high profits in favor of investor and public support. Legislation doesn't hurt corporations because they can rise above it, buy it outright, or move away from it. The way to hurt a company is to hurt its bottom line.

A LITTLE SERIOUS DISRESPECT /
Bryan Brickner, PhD

The economic engine of America is fueled by expansion, most necessarily, the expansion of markets. Arthur Schlesinger notes many commingling factors involved in expansion in his seminal work, The Imperial Presidency. He warns of taking lightly the power to make war, pointing out that the power to make war is always already necessitated by national and global concerns.

NOT PARITY, BUT DISPARITY /
Hiren K. Bose

ENGLISH ROBUST!
Rajgopal Nidamboor

Language, according to the great German philosopher Martin Heidegger, conveys not only information but also commitment. Heidegger always reckoned that language was not about describing a separate world that existed out there. His contention, in today's context, was clear. If we were to eliminate language, the ubiquitous computer a worker assembled would be reduced to a nonsensical object. To quote Fernando Flores, a Heidegger "protégé:" "A human society operates through the expression of requests and promises.

THE POWERLESSNESS OF THE POWERFUL
Colin Shea

Vaclav Havel has become part of the lie. He allowed himself to be used like a worn-out mannequin by the grinning idiot in the White House: used to help justify an unprovoked war of aggression whose terrible consequences we are only now beginning to understand. He links his once honored name to the despicable agenda of American imperialism in its most distressing form, the mad and obsessive need to dominate Cuba once again.
